Gamescom 2014 Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain Stream Impressions

"Snake is infiltrating onto more platforms than we initially anticipated"
When Konami gave their first lengthy video of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain at E3 it looked to impress and succeeded in a grand fashion. The breadth of options available seemed almost endless, based around the large open world and incredibly dynamic stealth options. For the Gamescom 2014 Metal Gear Solid V stream, they expanded on this idea by showing the same mission but tackling it in a completely separate fashion.
Again, we meet Snake in the Afghanistan desert trying to infiltrate a heavily armed base to gather information on some sensitive documents. Unlike the last showing which used the dynamic weather system to his advantage, this time Snake used speed to quickly move onto his targets. The mission took place during the early hours of the morning compared to mid day in the E3 demo and really demonstrated just how much the soldiers you are facing moved based on time and the situation at hand.

The thing to really take away from this demo that wasn't present in the previous one is the adaptability of the artificial intelligence. Based on how you play the game soldiers can start to counter tactics that you tend to favor. The moment in question is when Snake shot a tranquilizer dart at an enemies head only to have it bounce off because of a helmet he was wearing. It's a cool idea to think that the game will constantly be pushing you to be unpredictable and vary up your ideas to be more effective.
The demo ended with the big announcement that both Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain will be sneaking their way onto Steam and of course the ridiculous nature of the new and improved cardboard box. While not as jaw dropping as its first showing, the game still shows a lot of promise and ambition. If anything, the demo really proved that Metal Gear is a great fit for open world and really makes the player feel in more control than ever.
Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is set to come out on Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC.
