‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Likely for August 2014

Everyone and their kid brother seems to know, but Marvel Studios will still not give official confirmation that Guardians of the Galaxy will be the final film of Phase II, the series of movies leading up to The Avengers 2.

Yet movement keeps happening within the studio, as Disney has pushed the release date for this "unannounced" film from May 16, 2014 to August 1, 2014. The first full weekend in August has proven to be successful in the recent past for films not quite confident in hanging with the big boys of summer, and given the great degree of unfamiliarity between the general public and Guardians of the Galaxy, it's fair to say the move fits.

Deadline's reporting on the move and "Guardians" pretty much assure that it's true. The respected media outlet also says that the Guardians, a team of superheroes from another galaxy, will fight Thanos, the Marvel villain who appeared at the end of The Avengers. Based on recent comic story lines, it is believed the Guardians will join the Avengers to fight Thanos again in May 2015.

Last year, the first weekend in August saw Rise of the Planet of the Apes take $54 million, the year before action comedy The Other Guys made $35 million and in 2009 G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra made $54 million. In 2008, The Dark Knight dominated through the beginning of August, and The Dark Knight Rises could do the same, though Sony's remake of Total Recall is building some serious buzz.

Marvel will also release Captain America 2 in April 2014, while Sony plans to release a sequel to this weekend's The Amazing Spider-Man that May. Fox will also deliver a sequel to X-Men: First Class that summer.

Expect for official word from Marvel on Guardians of the Galaxy at Comic-Con later this month.
