Guy Ritchie to Direct ‘Treasure Island’ Adaptation

Guy Ritchie has been attached to many projects over the years, including the 300 sequel, an adaptation of DC’s Lobo, a remake of Cannonball Run and an adaptation of Sgt. Rock. Now, one of Warner Bros.’ go-to directors has been offered the chance to direct an adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.

Deadline reports that Ritchie will be working with his Sherlock Holmes producer Lionel Wigram and Langley Park’s Kevin McCormick. It is expected that Ritchie and Wigram will produce this project together along with The Man From U.N.C.L.E., which Ritchie reportedly agreed to take over from Steven Soderbergh late last year.

Treasure Island is of course a classic novel that appeals to people of all ages. Choosing Ritchie to direct is logical; he was able to update another classic piece of English literature with Sherlock Holmes and give it an action spin. Treasure Island was also a novel published at around the same time as the Arthur Conan Doyle stories. This adaptation comes from first-time screenwriter Alex Harakis.

There have been many adaptations of Treasure Island from Disney’s live-action version in 1950 to Muppet Treasure Island to the animated flop Treasure Planet. Most recently, BSkyB’s released a TV miniseries.
