Turn off the Lights

“Heavy Rain” movie taking form, writer hired

Years of development and a successful release made Heavy Rain a must own, PS3 exclusive title. Given it’s style, it’s no surprise that a film adaptation would be put into motion. Now,Variety has it that David Milch, creator of NYPD Blue and Deadwood, is set to adapt the game’s extensive (and often wandering) script for Warner Bros, who have moved to fast-track the project.

For anyone not aware of the plot, the synopsis is as follows:

“…spanning four days of mystery and suspense, the hunt is on for a murderer known only as the Origami Killer - named after his macabre calling card of leaving behind folded paper shapes at crime scenes…the public is gripped with fear as the police seem powerless to stop the carnage, and another potential victim — Shaun Mars — has gone missing. Now four characters, each following their own leads and with their own motives, must take part in a desperate attempt to prevent the killer from taking yet another life.”

Milch’s involvement gives hope to the project’s success, which despite coming from strong source material, still faces an uphill battle being branded a “video game adaption”. Given his experience with investigative storytelling, Milch penning the script should be a sign that Warner Bros. looks to keep much of the bite that kept the game as compelling as it was.

It only helps that Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne, formally of New Line Cinema, are onboard to produce; both bearing responsibility for getting the (quite dark) serial killer-themed Seven made some years back. As the project is being fast-tracked, don’t be surprised to hear an announcement on who will be directing and starring in the film soon.

So what do you folks think? Could the big screen treatment of Heavy Rain be a success? Or is the game’s heavy emphasis on a player’s in-game choices a deterrent for adapting it into a single film?
