id Software has Rage

So Rage is a first-person shooter that takes place on Earth after most of the life on Earth was wiped out in a cataclysmic event with some of the survivors taking shelter underground in order to keep humanity going. Sounds familiar, no?

Fortunately, even though the setting will remind players of Fallout 3 and Borderlands, Rage is it’s own game. Rage is the first brand new IP in around ten years for id Software, the famous developers who created the infamous title Doom.

The most obvious difference between Rage and its competitors is the graphics. Rage looks absolutely gorgeous and maxes out at 60 frames per second, even on consoles. The artwork for areas and dungeons will all be unique as well, meaning that no two hallways should look exactly the same and areas will look fresh and exciting when you get to see them.

Another difference lies in the gameplay. Although Rage will have dungeons and quests from NPCs like Fallout 3 and Borderlands, Rage is more action-heavy. Enemies move at a much faster pace, making the game more of a twitch-shooter than anything else. Enemies of different clans will also have different behaviors. For example, the “Ghost” bandit clan is a group of humanoids who move at a fast pace to try and confuse the player, while the “Wasted” clan rushes the player with melee weapons.

Even though id Software has implemented many things to set Rage aside from its wasteland buddies, that’s not to say it won’t draw comparisons to other games, including Zelda. In every unique area such as a dungeon, you will receive a new unique item to help aid you in your future endeavors. For example, one of the first unique items you’ll pick up is called the wingstick, which functions similarly to a boomerang.

Regardless of what id Software was influenced by in the making of Rage, it will surely be a spectacular shooter. Look forward to Rage sometime in 2011.
