IDW Unveils New Projects at Comic Con

There are so many interesting announcements to come out of San Diego Comic Con, but let’s focus on just one publisher: IDW. IDW Publishing had numerous reveals at SDCC, including a slate of new series and miniseries, including some surprising and fascinating crossovers.   Two of the most enduring science fiction movie franchises of all time are Star Trek and Planet of the Apes. Both are in the middle of resurgence, too, since each series is two movies into successful reboots. Why not combine them?!? IDW is teaming up with BOOM! Studios for Star Trek/Planet of the Apes: The Prime Directive. Helming this incredible combination will be writers Scott and David Tipton. The art will be handled by British artist Rachael Stott.     Another cool crossover will happen with two of IDW’s most popular licenses. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters will take the pizza-loving gang from the sewers and have them meet the resourceful band of ghost hunters. The series will be written by Tom Waltz and Eric Burnham with art by Tom Schoening. A surprising crossover will happen in Angry Bird Transformers, written by current Transformers writer John Barber with art from Marcelo Ferriera. Anything can happen when these two franchises get together.     IDW had non-crossover announcements, too, including new comics based on some popular movies and TV shows. IDW will begin an Edward Scissorhands series near Halloween. Written by popular writer Kate Leth, the art will be handled by Drew Rausch, with the first issue featuring a cover from Gabriel Rodriguez, of Locke & Key fame. Another exciting new series will be based on Orphan Black, the critically-acclaimed cult show from BBC America about a group of clones. The comic will be set in the world of the TV show but won’t cover the same stories. This series, for which the creative team was not yet revealed, will begin early 2015.     Of course, that was not all of the IDW announcements from Comic Con. New series featuring Garbage Pail Kids, Galaxy Quest, Dungeons & Dragons, Eric Powell’s The Goon, and others are all coming soon to IDW. Transformers, which has three current ongoing series, recently wrapped up the mega-event “Dark Cybertron.” There is another event on the horizon for the Autobots and Deceptacons, though, as “Combiner Wars,” a six-issue event, will run over a number of titles beginning in March 2015.
