Keira Knightley To Play The Sugar Plum Fairy In Disney’s Nutcracker Adaptation

"Hope she's got her dancing shoes ready!"

Disney is continuing its trend of making live action fairytale films with the newly announced The Nutcracker and the Four Realms! Based on the 1816 story The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann, of course made famous by Tchaikovsky’s ballet, this Christmas tale is sure to make a beautiful film.

The story centres around Clara, played by Mackenzie Foy (aka Renesmee in The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2), and her Nutcracker Christmas present, which comes to life to help her battle the evil seven-headed Mouse King.

Variety broke the news that Keira Knightley (Pirates of the Caribbean series) is now attached to play the benevolent Sugar Plum Fairy, alongside principal dancer at the American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland, and Morgan Freeman in as yet unannounced roles. Fingers crossed we get to see Morgan Freeman in a seven-headed mouse costume!

The film will be directed by Lasse Hallström (What’s Eating Gilbert Grape, Chocolat), and the script has been written by newcomer Ashleigh Powell. Mark Gordon (Saving Private Ryan, Criminal Minds) will produce the project, alongside Lindy Goldstein and Larry J. Franco, with Sam Dickerman and Allison Erlikhman overseeing for Disney.
