‘Les Misérables’ Teaser Dreams a Dream

When we heard that Tom Hooper’s adaptation of the stage musical Les Misérables would consist of live singing, there was cause for worry. Last night, we saw some new images from the film, but as if those stills weren’t breathtaking enough, Universal unveiled the first teaser for “Les Mis” this morning.

Throughout the teaser, we hear Anne Hathaway sing a completely fearless rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream.” It’s a beautifully broken emotional outcry that doesn’t see Hathaway belting out those climactic few moments towards the song’s end, but is intead far more visceral than the one in the stage musical. It’s perhaps not right to judge it on a scale of “better” or “worse” because that’s impossible. Rather, it’s something different that Hooper’s trying to do with this film.

Hathaway also appears in the teaser, as do Samantha Barks, Hugh Jackman, Eddie Redmayne, and Amanda Seyfried. Still no Helena Bonham Carter or Sacha Baron Cohen, but hopefully we’ll see some of them soon.

“Les Mis” arrives in theaters on Dec. 14. check out.
