Mads Mikkelsen Will Play a Villain in ‘Thor 2’

Marvel isn’t playing around. As its latest flick, a little film called The Avengers, continues to Hulk-smash box-office records, the studio isn’t wasting any time enjoying its success. Thor 2 hits theaters next year, and Mads Mikkelsen might be playing one of the film’s villains.

Variety reports that the actor is currently negotiating to star in the sequel as an enemy of Thor, who’ll once again be played by Chris Hemsworth. Unfortunately, Marvel’s very tight-lipped regarding who that villain will be. Those worried about the return of Loki needn’t worry, though. Tom Hiddleston will reprise his role as the Thor and The Avengers antagonist, especially considering the character is still very vital to the Marvel universe.

The decision to cast Mikkelsen is both inspired and sensible. The actor is most recognizable for playing James Bond baddie Le Chiffre in Casino Royale; he’s also starred in other action-oriented flicks such as the 2009 Clash of the Titans remake and last year’s The Three Musketeers.

Alan Taylor, a creative force behind the Emmy Award-winning fantasy-drama Game of Thrones, sits in the director’s seat for this sequel. Oscar-nominated scribe Robert Rodat has rewritten a screenplay penned by Thor co-writer Don Payne.

Expect more key casting negotiations to be announced soon as Marvel wants production to begin before the summer ends. Thor 2 currently aims to hammer its way into theaters on November 15, 2013.
