Mark Millar Updates ‘Kick-Ass 2’ Chances

News continues to be both dire, yet hopeful for a sequel to 2010’s Kick-Ass. While speaking to Hero Complex, series creator Mark Millar notes that the window for a sequel to the cult-hit is fast closing.

Millar, who is currently in the middle of writing Kick-Ass 2, spoke on the continued success of the comic series, but when asked directly about a film sequel, stated “Hopefully, we can use the same actors if and when we do a sequel, but getting Matthew [Vaughn] to direct or Jane [Goldman] to write a movie at this budget would be very difficult because they’re superstars now and they have projects of their own.” Since 2010, Vaughn has since enjoyed critical success with X-Men: First Class; Goldman helping to pen the scripts for both “First Class” and the Helen Mirren starrer The Debt.

Millar continues, noting “if this happens anytime soon…Matthew will produce and possibly co-write…and hire a new director. But there’s a window because the actors are all supposed to be in high school and if this came out after 2013, for example, that window would have closed.” In other words, the sequel is on borrowed time, but Millar is quick to finish with “I think people will be pretty happy with the conversations we’ve been having.” So the project is not as dead as some would believe.

To call the first film a flop is a gross exaggeration. Kick-Ass was produced on a $28 million budget and went on to make near $100 million in global ticket sales (no 3D needed). Added with the continued success enjoyed by DVD/Blu-Ray sales and strong word of mouth have led Kick-Ass to be one of the cult-classics of 2010. There’s still a chance to build hype for a sequel, but like Millar notes: time’s ticking by.
