Orange is the New Black Designated a Drama by Netflix

Since its premiere this past summer, one of the most prevalent questions being asked by critics of Orange is the New Black (besides why can’t the show be back sooner) was whether the show would compete as a comedy or drama during the awards season. The common belief was that the series, which is part drama and part comedy, would opt to be considered in the comedy category. It turns out everyone was wrong.

Netflix has announced that the series will be competing as a drama, opting to pit the show against the online service’s other lauded drama House of Cards. In addition to Cards, Black will be going up against the final season of Breaking Bad in the 2014 awards cycle, as well as perennial favorites Mad Men, Homeland, and Game of Thrones, just to name a few.

The series, which has generated raves from critics and has become Netflix’s most watched series, will face a decidedly uphill battle for award recognition – a struggle that likely could have been avoided if the series competed in the comedy category.
