Turn off the Lights

Script for ‘Hunger Games’ Sequel ‘Catching Fire’ in Works

Success or not, Lionsgate is pulling for the long haul when it comes to "The Hunger Games" series. With the first film just a couple months away, word is that Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours), who adapted the first book, is well underway scripting the second installment, Catching Fire.

The news doesn't exactly come as a shock, considering that Summit Entertainment — having  been bought by Lionsgate recently for $400 million — has a lot rolling on the success of the "Hunger Games" films. With the "Twilight" franchise (Summit's leading/only asset) coming to a close this year, executives are hoping that lightening can strike twice on the adaptation of Suzanne Collins' bestselling series. The second film already has an intended release date of November 22, 2013 with director Gary Ross set to return alongside stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth.

"The Hunger Games" series is set in a dystopic future where North America as we know it has fallen and a new nation called Panem has risen, a nation split into 12 districts centered around a capital city. Due to a failed revolution against the Capital fought years ago, every year one boy and one girl from each district must compete in a fight-to-the-death tournament for the nation's entertainment dubbed the Hunger Games. Catching Fire tells of the repercussions that occur based on the result of the tournament in the first book.
