Trailer Tracker: The Ward, Big Mommas, Wimpy Kid 2

Did you miss us? Well, unfortunately the doldrums of January at the theaters carry over into the release of hot new trailers. Even with a week off to build, Trailer Tracker doesn’t have much in the way of mind-blowing, so we have a special entry to round out the release of three new clips that begin with our featured trailer: horror legend John Carpenter’s The Ward. We also have Martin Lawrence’s fat-suit comedy Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son and the sequel to last year's hit Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules.

Our unique clip is an extremely well done recut of the classic film Ghostbusters. Inception was one of the year’s biggest hits, and with Oscar nominations to come, daily viral videos for the mind-bender come in dozens. Inception's score is cleverly integrated in this fan made entry; have fun with that one! It’s Trailer Tracker.

New Trailers This Week:
The Ward
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

The Ward

thewardpicAfter the universally labeled abomination that was Ghost of Mars all the way back in 2001, horror icon John Carpenter, who gave us classics including Halloween and Assault on Precinct 13, returns to his roots in The Ward, a classic ghost story about an institutionalized woman (Amber Heard) who is tormented by a spirit. Though I can only hope but be excited by such a project, early reviews have been less than favorable and the last horror legend that made a “comeback” (cough cough Wes Craven) made one of the worst movies of 2010 with My Soul to Take.

The Ward actually premiered on September 13 at the 2010 Toronto International Film Festival and considering the non-buzz I feel the worse case scenario could soon be at hand. Amber Heard has been on a bit of a horror streak for the last few years having starred in fright films such as Zombieland, The Stepfather, and And Soon the Darkness, so by now she should be used to the tropes that are demanded by the genre; that and looking good naked.

Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son

In 2000, Big Momma’s House became a surprise $170-million hit and established comedian Martin Lawrence as a star. Six years after Lawrence first donned his fat suit, the sequel to the cross-dressing comedy had an even bigger opening weekend and found its way to a solid $140 million despite middling reviews. Well, even though you probably didn’t ask for it, Big Momma is back, now with a son (also undercover thanks to a witnessed murder) he is played by Brandon T. Jackson who proved his chops in Tropic Thunder as a gay rapper. “Like Father” will be released on Feb. 18.

Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules

Another sequel, this time to Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which is based on a series of successful books gets its trailer. However, sans rising star Chloe Moretz has clearly moved onto bigger and better things. The clip is packed with broad antics, potty humor, and considering the rate at which this follow-up was produced, few should expect a masterpiece (though the kids should no doubt be amused by slipping, poop and various other low-brow antics). One interesting element is the choice of director: David Bowers, who helmed the delightful 2006 animated film Flushed Away from Aardman Animation. Though alas, I would be shocked if he was able to transfer any charm to this kid pick.

Ghost Busters Inception Recut

A campy classic, it is both a testament to the creator of the viral video and that of Inception's score that such an epic and serious effort could be created from a film featuring a giant marshmallow man walking around. There isn’t much more to say than have a good laugh with this well done recut.
