TV Shows Renewals: Girls, Supernatural and More

It's early May, barely more than a week from the upfront events, so the last renewals are starting to trickle out, including from premium cable channels.

In line with expectations, the CW has renewed its three strongest series: The Vampire Diaries (fourth season), 90210 (fifth season) and Supernatural (eighth season). There is no word yet on the network's bubble shows, Gossip Girl, Nikita, The Secret Circle, Ringer and Hart Of Dixie.

Probably for lack of a better alternative, Showtime has renewed The Borgias for a third season of 10 episodes. The renaissance drama is right now in the middle of its second season, and despite being the strongest series on the network's current lineup, its premiere was significantly down from last year's. In fact, the series has steadily lost viewers throughout its first season and has so far been unable to match its worst performance from last year (680,000 viewers).

Surprising no one, HBO has renewed its freshman comedies Girls and Veep for a second season. The critically acclaimed and somewhat controversial Girls has performed almost as well as Veep, which benefits from having Game of Thrones as its lead-in. Girls takes a comic look at the assorted humiliations and rare triumphs of a group of girls in their early twenties, while Veep is about a new female vice president of the U.S. who discovers the job is nothing like she expected.
