“Wrath of the Titans” enlisting Edgar Ramirez, Toby Kebbel and maybe others

Things are looking better and better for Wrath of the Titans by the minute. Actors Edgar Ramirez and Toby Kebbell are negotiating to star in Jonathan Liebesman’s surprisingly promising sequel to the less-than-fantastic Clash of the Titans. Ramirez will play Ares, the God of War, and Kebbell will be playing the Phoenician king Agenor. Bill Nighy might play Hephaestus, but nothing on that is even close to official yet according to The Wrap.

Meanwhile, Georgina Haig, Janet Montgomery, Dominique McElligott, Clemence Poesy, and Hayley Atwell are in the running to play Andromeda, originally played by Alexa Davalos in "Clash."  The studio is actually holding screen tests to decide on who will play mythological character that could be a potential love interest for Perseus. That role will be again played by Sam Worthington.

Ramirez, as of now, is perhaps most famous for his Golden Globe- and Screen Actors Guild-nominated leading work in Oliver Assayas’s Carlos, which saw the actor portraying Carlos the Jackal. He’s picked up tons of accolades from various critics groups and almost won the Los Angeles Film Critics Association’s Best Actor prize, but he won’t be up for an Oscar thanks to stringent eligibility requirements. Look for him and the lengthy miniseries to make a splash at the next Emmy ceremony. Regardless of Ramirez’s Oscar eligiblity, the acclaim for his work is near unanimous, so he should bring a very much needed gravitas to "Wrath."

Kebbell is a unique case. His most recent ventures were the financially disappointing Disney flicks Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, neither of which really made him a household name. However, he’s poised to have a breakthrough this year with two very notable titles: Robert Redford’s The Conspirator, where he’ll play John Wilkes Booth alongside Robin Wright and James McAvoy, and Steven Spielberg’s War Horse. By the time that “Wrath” rolls around in March 2012, he should be a much bigger name in the industry.

Expect more casting updates in the near future.
