Today marks the one hundred and twenty-first anniversary of Nintendo’s birth. Founded on September 23, 1889, Nintendo opened its doors for the first time in Kyoto Japan producing handmade hanafuda cards for the Japanese youth.  Nintendo tried its hands with several other businesses such as: a Love Hotel, Taxi company, and selling instant rice and noodles, most of which failed.



Nintendo is most renowned for its role in the Japanese gaming industry and their prevalent influence in the history of gaming. Nintendo entered the gaming industry in 1974, securing the rights to distribute the Magnavox Odyssey video game console in Japan. In 1977, Nintendo began producing its own Color TV home video game consoles. Four versions of these consoles were produced, each including variations of a single game. In 1980 Nintendo launched its first arcade game entitled Game and Watch and the rest is history.

Some of the most memorable games, characters and systems have come from the creative geniuses at Nintendo, such as; Mario, the Gameboy handheld systems, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), Zelda and much more.

Once Nintendo entered the electronic gaming industry, they went on to become one of the greatest gaming companies of all time. In October 2008 Nintendo has sold over 470 million hardware units and 2.7 billion software units’ worldwide.
