Comic-Con Movies 2011: Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

One of the unexpected panels announced for Comic-Con 2011 was Legendary Pictures, the film company partnered with Warner Bros. that has delivered Zack Snyder's films and Christopher Nolan's "Batman" features. One of their long-term projects is Pacific Rim, a all-stops-pulled monster movie being directed by Guillermo del Toro.

The panel was Del Toro's third at the convention already. He was joined by screenwriter Travis Beacham (Clash of the Titans) and stars Idris Elba (The Wire), Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Charlie Day (Horrible Bosses).

Del Toro described the film much like those of us who've heard of the project have: "Giant fucking monsters vs. giant fucking robots." He said he was committed to bringing the finest of both to the big screen, and also that the film would be realistic in its approach of how people would handle an attack from a 25-story-tall monster and what weapons they'd need.

Like all the panels at Comic-Con every year, the actors and Del Toro spent much time praising each other. Hunnam's performance in Sons of Anarchy sold Del Toro on Hunnam and he apparently agreed to let Charlie Day join the cast because he let him play a fat wino in the bar on "It's Always Sunny." Elba said he appreciated working with someone who "celebrates imagination."

Visually, marketing concept art, such as the logo below (thanks to Cinema Blend), was all that the audience got to see.
