Black Widow could get her own film

Badass female heroes are few and far between in most modern comic films, one of the more recent (and better received) being Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and her kick-ass action sequences for Iron Man 2. Now, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has noted during a press conference for the DVD release of Iron Man 2 that Marvel is in the early stages of discussion regarding a Black Widow spinoff film, intending to have Johansson reprise her role.

As the intended project is not even close to the developmental stages, any information on the story of the potential spinoff is pure speculation at this point. However, given Marvel's recent slate of origin stories, it is not out of the question to guess that a potential Black Widow spinoff could address how Widow came to be trained and work for the S.H.I.E.L.D. Organization, not to mention how her partnership with Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) came to be.

Feige was quick to point out while a Widow film was a distinct possibility, “The Avengers come first.” Fans of Widow need not despair as she is set to play some part in the upcoming Marvel ensemble pic, but it does lay groundwork for further delving into Widow's complicated history, originally being an enemy of the U.S. in the comic books.

There are a number of factors not being accounted for, such as whether or not Johansson's contract will carry over into a spinoff film (she only has to make a certain number of appearances as the character) or whether or not Marvel will be able to financially afford such a film should “Avengers” bomb (knock on wood, for many Marvel fanboys). For Marvel, the only way to find out is keep moving forward.
