Turn off the Lights

DS Fire Emblem Sets Japanese Charts Ablaze

Despite the Wii getting beat by 360 sales in North America, Nintendo still holds a stranglehold in the handheld and Japanese markets. During this week, Nintendo’s software finished on top in Japanese sales. Interestingly, on the top for software was Fire Emblem New Mystery of The Emblem for the DS. Surprisingly, PSP held the top spot for hardware sales while the DS and Wii held second and third place respectivley.

Fire Emblem New Mystery of The Emblem, ironically, isn’t actually all that new. The DS game happens to be a remake of the original SNES Fire Emblem. Though, it isn’t all old news as there are new features such as character creation and the ability to turn off permanent deaths.

Aside from sounding like it was named by a hipster and having new features, the new Fire Emblem sold pretty well for its first week. By pretty well, I mean it sold 136,000 units, with Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Victory Road on the Wii trailing by only slightly less. For inquiring minds, the full software list is below.

1. Fire Emblem New Mystery of the Emblem (Nintendo, DS): 136,000

2. Dragon Quest Monsters Battle Road Victory (Square Enix, Wii): 136,000

3. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2010 (Konami, PS3): 120,000

4. Wii Party (Nintendo, Wii): 113,000 (348,000)

5. Last Ranker (Capcom, PSP): 61,000

6. Jikkyou Powerful Pro Baseball 2010 (Konami, PSP): 52,000

7. Inazuma Eleven 3 (Level-5, DS): 46,000 (649,000)

8. White Knight Chronicles 2 (SCE, PS3): 34,000 (210,000)

9. Harves Moon Twin‘s Village (MMV, NDS): 20,000 (84,000)

10. Momotaro Dentetsu Tag Match (Hudson, PSP): 19,000

With great software sales, great hardware sales usually follow, right? Yes and no. Despite, being king of the software hill, Nintendo actually got beat in the hardware category. The stealer of the crown? None other than the PSP of course.

1. PSP: 26,786 (24,421)

2. DSi LL: 25,884 (28,916)
