It looks like 2015 will be a huge year for teams of superheroes. The release of The Avengers 2 on May 1, 2015 and Warner Bros. plans to get Justice League into theaters would already be enough to make that statement true, but now 20th Century Fox has announced a release date for its reboot of Fantastic Four from up-and-coming Chronicle director Josh Trank.
Mr. Fantastic, the Invisible Girl, the Human Torch and the Thing will return to theaters on March 6, 2015, which conceivably places it as the first event film of 2015. It's a weekend that Disney has been snatching up ever since March 5, 2010 when Alice and Wonderland opened to $116.1 million.
The Mouse House tried to open John Carter around that time this year to no avail, but Oz the Great and Powerful lands March 8, 2013 and Maleficent arrives March 14, 2014. Superhero films have yet to really be tested in March, but it's a good time of year for low-risk, high-reward movies.
Trank was courted by countless studios for their tentpoles after the success of Chronicle, but he chose to work with Fox again when he decided on Fantastic Four. The reboot will be written by newcomer Jeremy Slater with a story from Slater and Trank.
Hopefully, with all this budding talent in place, Fantastic Four will be a refreshing, cutting-edge take on the superhero film.
