Hi-Rez Studios first gained recognition through their Tribes-styled MMORPG, Global Agenda. While Global Agenda was quite good when it launched, it has changed significantly since then with the game getting a major overhaul in the Sandstorm updates and even more recently when Hi-Rez changed the game to a free-to-play model. Hi-Rez Studios is also working on the new Tribes games, the MMO shooter Tribes Universe and Tribes: Ascend.
This morning Hi-Rez announced that on top of its Tribes offerings to gamers, it is also working on Smite. Smite is an online arena-based strategy game which Hi-Rez likens to DotA, although Smite will be based on the Unreal 3 Engine and will use this to introduce more combat orientated gameplay.
Smite will have a unique mythological feel and the different characters that you can play will be different gods ranging from Zeus to Anubis. Smite will also stand apart from games like DotA, League of Legends and Heroes of Newerth in that it will utilize a third-person camera as opposed to the normal RTS camera that is usually used in these games.
While Smite doesn't have any screenshots yet, Hi-Rez has said that the game is already in a playable state and that they will be unveiling more information in the coming months.
