Idris Elba Joins Del Toro’s ‘Pacific Rim’

Despite no new releases in three years and his inability to get The Hobbit and At the Mountains of Madness off the ground, Guillermo Del Toro remains one of Hollywood’s most sought-after directors. With his new project Pacific Rim picking up casting steam, Deadline is now reporting that Idris Elba (Thor, The Wire) has been tapped to play the role of Sensi.

Little is known about the project, save what can be found in the film’s logline: “Set in a future in which malevolent creatures threaten the earth, the planet must band together and use highly advanced technology to eradicate the growing menace.” While not exactly confirmed, it sounds like giant, human-controlled robots will be a part of the equation.

Elba takes a role originally meant for Tom Cruise; big upgrade to go from Cruise to Elba if you ask this writer. He joins Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy) and Charlie Day (It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia). Production is scheduled for this November, with an intended release date sometime in 2013.
