Back in November, Valve employee, Greg Coomer, tweeted the image of an unknown piece of hardware. Rumours soon started circulating that Valve was working on a piece of hardware, that might be solely dedicated to just supporting Valve gaming. After posting a recruiting advertisement for an experienced electronics engineer, rumours are now hinting heavily towards a custom home console. The advertisement aims to offer “whole new gaming experiences” and can be seen below.
“For years, Valve has been all about writing software that provides great gameplay experiences. Now we’re developing hardware to enhance those experiences, and you can be a key part of making that happen. Join our highly motivated team that’s doing hardware design, prototyping, testing, and production across a wide range of platforms. We’re not talking about me-too mice and gamepads here – help us invent whole new gaming experiences.”
There’s been no console cycle for a long time and these rumours do seem to be showing signs of Valve wanting to try something new and innovative. It’s no easy market though; Atari and Sega could vouch for that. Valve seems to be planning something and it would be great to know what it is. Time will only tell.
