Juan Carlos Fresnadillo to Direct ‘Highlander’ Reboot

While premiering his new film The Intruders at this weekend's Toronto International Film Festival, Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later) has been tapped to helm Summit Entertainment’s upcoming reboot of the “Highlander” series.

This news only adds to Fresnadillo’s growing reputation in Hollywood, and apparently for reboots. Not only will he be rebooting Highlander, he has also been named to direct the reboot of The Crow — initially starring Bradley Cooper who left the project due to scheduling reasons. The Highlander job became available (and highly sought after) when Justin Lin (Fast Five) left the project to continue work on the “Fast and the Furious” series.

The “Highlander” series took off in 1986 with a film starring Christopher Lambert and Sean Connery that focused on dueling immortals who clashed because “there can be only one.” The film inspired several sequels, a (successful) T.V. series, various animated stories and novels. The upcoming re-imagining, tentatively titled Highlander: The Reckoning, currently has no release date.
