Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning Developer in Trouble

Despite the success of 38 Studio’s Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, the developer looks to be deep in a financial hole. According to a report by a Rhode Island NBC affiliate, the Rhode Island government offered 38 Studios a $75 million loan to relocate from Massachusetts to Rhode Island, which they accepted. However, now the government is in talks with the developer about its future.

"We're always working to keep Rhode Island companies solvent, and that's what we're doing with 38 Studios," Rhode Island governor Lincoln Chafee said.

38 Studios reportedly is now submitting a missed $1.125 million dollar payment to the government, at the expense of paying their employees. If 38 Studios goes under, the report said, state taxpayers would have to make up the original loan, plus interest, which would come out to $112.6 million over the next eight years. 38 Studios nor publisher Electronic Arts have commented on the situation.

Since its release in February, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning has sold more than 330,000 copies across the U.S.
