Nowadays, few video game franchises are as infamous for dying and reviving like Mortal Kombat. Formerly one of Midway’s properties, the franchise which is now owned by Warner Brothers, which has pulled another act of reincarnation. However, it is not in the form of a video game. Instead, an interesting near-eight minute video appeared on YouTube under a channel appropriately named, MortalKombatRebirth.
Upon viewing the video in question a Deacon City is in turmoil. Immediately after, the camera cuts to a police station where Jackson Briggs, a.k.a. Jax, greets the screen on his way to question a shadowy figure. Jax, played by Michael Jai White, starts detailing other M.K. characters like Reptile, Baraka, and Shang Tsung to the shadowy figure. Surprisingly, Reptile and Baraka are depicted as insane and depraved murderers. Unsurprisingly, Jax‘s partner in crime-busting, Sonya Blade, makes an appearance. Interestingly, Sonya is portrayed by none other than Jeri Ryan.
What does this mean? Is another Mortal Kombat film on the way? Is this just an awesome, albeit expensive, marketing ploy? Perhaps, since E3 is around the corner, a new game is imminent? Unfortunately, Warner Brothers and all other parties involved are keeping the lid closed for now. Thankfully, whatever the trailer is trying to tease looks extremely promising.
