Turn off the Lights

Prototype 2 Set to Surpass the Original

Prototype 2 was unveiled at last year's VGA awards but E3 is the first time gamers got their chance to see the game in action. While the Prototype had you playing as Alex Mercer, the sequel sets him up as the game's villain and you play as Sgt. James Heller, a new character who blames Mercer for the deaths of his wife and child, and is set to take him down.

The first thing that you'll notice about Prototype 2 is that it looks far better then the original. Radical have a new art director for the game and this was clearly a good move on their part as the game has a far more defined art style now. The virus ravaged New York that the game is set in now looks less bland and more like a city should.

Prototype 2 adds new powers for Heller to utilize against his foes and E3 footage shows the Bio-Bomb and the Tendril power. The Bio-Bomb allows you to infect someone and turn them into a living bomb that blasts deadly tendrils everywhere. The Tendril power itself allows you to rip Heller's foes apart with powerful appendages. The "Web of Intrigue" mechanic is set to return from the first game and will be far more fleshed out and linked to the gameplay this time round. Heller has the ability to ping the enviroment and this allows him to find Web of Intrigue targets more easily. Absorbing these targets doesn't just give you tidbits of the story, it now also unlocks new side-missions.

As a big fan of the original, I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on Prototype 2 when it is released for Xbox, PS3 and PC in 2012.
