‘Resident Evil: Retribution’ Coming September 2012

It’s no surprise, but now it’s confirmed: Bloody Disgusting has it that a fifth “Resident Evil” film is coming, with main star Mila Jovovich and “Afterlife” director Paul W.S. Anderson set to return to their respective roles. The film will be titled Resident Evil: Retribution.

Despite being critically-lashed (even by myself), “Afterlife” proved to be a financial success, making near $300 million at the worldwide level on a budget of $60 million. Naturally, this sum can be credited due to inflated 3D ticket prices, but it was enough for Screen Gems to invest in a fifth film that will be based on W.S. Anderson’s own screenplay. Anderson also directed the first film in the series and has acted as an executive producer for all films since then. “Retribution” will mark his third time in the director’s chair for a “Resident Evil” film.

Allegedly, “Retribution” will take Alice (Jovovich) from her cargo tanker in Los Angeles to Toronto, Canada and Tokyo, Japan—no doubt connected to the Umbrella Corporation’s attack squad sent after her and her crew during the credits of “Afterlife." Of course, there is no official synopsis at this time.

Sienna Guillory—who played Jill Valentine in the second film and cameoed in the fourth—took to Twitter announcing she would return as Valentine for “Retribution." However, Bloody Disgusting has countered this, stating the role is currently being recast while the search is on for both Leon Kennedy—protagonist of the second and fourth “Resident Evil” games—and Barry Burton, a member of S.T.A.R.S. with ties to both Valentine and Albert Wesker (antagonist of the fourth film).

Production is being planned to start in October, for a September 14, 2012 release. Expect to see more news soon on (re)casting and plot(?) details soon.
