Shane Black officially directing “Iron Man 3”

When Jon Favreau left the helm of Iron Man 3 - primarily to direct Disney's Magic Kingdom - many were confused about who would hop on board, but as previously reported, we now know that Shane Black will be directing Iron Man 3.

Perhaps most famous for his only directorial project thus far – Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang – Black is best known as a writer, but Deadline Hollywood reports that it’s still up in the air as to whether or not he’ll pen the screenplay.

Since he’s only directed one film, skepticisim about the outcome of Iron Man 3 makes sense, but Black was able to handle the tricky terrain of dark comedy with his one film. Despite the obvious difference in genres, it’ll be a surprise if he can’t handle an effects-driven action flick. Plus, we might get the finest ensemble performance of the three Iron Man films. The odd assemblage of Robert Downey Jr., Val Kilmer, Rockmond Dunbar, and Michelle Monaghan worked for the better thanks to Black’s efforts in the director's seat.

It's a peculiar choice, yes, but with Downey Jr. required to approve any decision, it makes a lot of sense given their previous work. Black is also directing action flick Doc Savage and a Death Note adaptation for Warner Bros. Iron Man 3 tentatively hits theaters May 3, 2013.
