Simon West Will Direct ‘The Expendables 2’

There was so much back-and-forth about whether or not Sylvester Stallone would direct the sequel to his financially successful all-star action flick The Expendables, but Sly finally made the official announcement that he wouldn’t be directing the film.

Instead, the director will be Simon West. West helmed the financial hits Con Air and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, but his most recent project was his The Mechanic remake for CBS Films, a commercial disappointment that made less than $30 million domestically from a $40 million budget. Made by a fledgling company and starring Jason Statham, don't hold it against the director; after all, an "Expendable" movie demands nothing more than a keen eye for pyrotechnics.

Deadline Hollywood reports that production will be underway sometime this summer for an August 2012 release. No new casting has been made official, but Jean-Claude Van Damme has expressed interest in the film and Bruce Willis has been said to have an expanded role.

Is Simon West in expendable director, or is he just right for the “Expendables” universe?
