As the production date nears for Joss Whedon’s The Avengers film, more and more news (and rumors) are coming to light, true or not. Although it’s known that Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye and Nick Fury will all be front and center, no confirmation has come to light on who the Marvel dream team will face off against. This is likely why the fanboy circles are quick to grab onto anything, notably a line from the Albuquerque Journal (quoted by Ain’t it Cool News) in reference to the potential storyline and villains for Whedon’s superhero epic.
The article stated, “The Avengers script will blend Iron Man, Thor and Captain America story lines as the Avengers battle with two alien races, the Skrulls and the Kree”. Needless to say, word spread fast across the blogosphere.
However, Comingsoon.net is now confirming that the statement released by the Journal was not officially released by Marvel Studios, and chalks it up to a (big) research error on the part of the paper. This is not to say that the Skrulls and the Kree will not appear in the upcoming film, but as of this moment, nothing is officially confirmed.
So yes, we still have no villain(s) for The Avengers, save for Tom Hiddleston’s listing on the film’s IMDB page as Loki (which he will originate in the upcoming Thor film). With no other word on villains, we have little idea of where exactly Whedon plans to take the team in terms of tone. With the Skrulls and Kree potentially in the picture, could we be looking at settings off world? Or will the villain(s) keep the crew more “grounded” on Earth?
While news on the project is building, it still needs more momentum if it’s to generate rabid anticipation among the public rather than diehard fans, especially after the lukewarm (word of mouth) reception to Marvel Studio’s latest Iron Man 2. The reception of Thor and Captain America: The First Avenger in the upcoming new year may say a lot about The Avengers box office future.
