Sony announces underwater smartphone

Sony plans to release the waterproof new 4g LTE Xperia ZR to markets around the world quater. The device is protected from dust and is capable of being submerged up to 5ft for around 30 minutes in freshwater (so long as all ports are closed). Plus with a tempered glass screen covered by an anti-shatter film, this smartphone is a solid device. The shear idea of a phone being protected from puddles, toliets, and various other shallow bodies of liquid that threaten our devices is a worthy claim.

While the waterproof concept is a good sales pitch, the phone's specs show that it may not just be a gimmick. The phone has a 13 megapixel camera with Sony's Exmor RS and HDR (High Dynamic Range) for pictures and video. What this mean is along with crisp clean images, the phone will automatically adjust to produce the best picture settings in any lighting or setting. Another useful feature is a burst mode capable of taking an unlimited stream of pictures at 15 frames per second.

The screen is 4.6 inches with 720p resolution, and 319 PPI. Using the Mobile BRAVIA® Engine 2, Sony promises enhanced contrast, colour management improvements(claiming to produce human skin just as we perceive it), noise reduction, and enhanced sharpness. Also the screen has Sony's OptiContrast™ that increases viewing angles, decreases reflections, and even results in more responsive touchscreen. It does this by removing a layer of air that separates a screens from the touch sensors, and then by integrating the sensor layer to the top layer.

Inside the case you will find a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro quad-core 1.5 GHz processor, Andreno 320 GPU, and 2gb of ram. Running Android 4.1 Jellybean, the device also comes with NFC to connect to various other Sony devices like speakers or other smartphone. Finally the phone has a new STAMINA mode that with close background apps when the screen is off.

No news of an official price or release date but for those of you that interested feel free to check out the official Sony page here if you interested.
