Sylvester Stallone Might Direct “The Expendables 2” After All

The Sylvester Stallone-helmed action flick The Expendables didn’t impress critics, but Sly’s passion project was beloved by many simply for being a throwback to old-school action films. Of course the fans wanted a sequel, and not too long ago it was announced that there’d be one.

Getting the cast members to come back for The Expendables 2 didn’t pose a problem, but nabbing a director has proven to be much more of a hassle. Well, we may have finally found that director, and if this ends up being the case, this apple doesn’t fall far from the tree at all.

Expendables
fansite Expendables Premiere states that Sly will occupy the director’s seat for this sequel. Sly supervised the script written by David Agosto and Ken Kaufman and the film will open on August 17, 2012. However, neither Lionsgate nor Maple Picture has confirmed this update. Considering that this is a fansite, we might not want to jump to conclusions just yet; it could very well be wishful thinking presented as fact.

Sly remains a staple of the action genre to this day. Although I can’t honestly call myself a fan of the first film – and can’t picture myself enjoying this second installment – he deserves some level of respect for maintaining his devoted legion of fans.

This reminds me of the big debate over who’d direct The Hobbit, a debacle that seemingly lasted for an eternity and a day. In the end, it all came back to Peter Jackson. Are we really surprised that Sly might return to his directorial position?

If this is set in stone, we can expect more of the same old, same old with this sequel – for better or for worse, depending on how you look at it.

How do you feel about Sly possibly directing The Expendables 2?
