Tarantino’s Next is “Django Unchained,” Will Smith to Star?

Quentin Tarantino has announced his next film: Django Unchained, a spaghetti Western about a slave in the Old South who teams with a German bounty hunter to search for his wife. Aiming for a production date this fall, The Heat Vision blog of The Hollywood Reporter is stating that Will Smith is the frontrunner to star as the central lead.

Reportedly, the titular Django is a freed slave who seeks to reunite with his wife, who is still a slave. His path crosses with a German bounty hunter—rumored to be played by Christoph Waltz (Inglorious Basterds)— to take down the plantation owner who holds Django’s wife captive.

If Smith agrees to join the project, it would mark his first return to theaters since 2008’s Seven Pounds, which was met with lukewarm reception at the domestic box office. He’s not the first choice that comes to mind when casting a Tarantino flick, especially given how “clean” (in terms of content) his resume has been in his past few projects. If this is a Tarantino film set in the South at the time of slavery, expect a lot of violence and liberal use of curse words. Plus, if Tarantino staple Samuel L. Jackson is rumored to be a part of the project, you know it will get messy.
