The Great Gatsby: Off to a Good Start

Despite marginally bad reviews from the RottenTomatoes critics community, The Great Gatsby, directed by Baz Luhrmann, has already made more than $3 million at the box office in theaters pre-screening it. The film is set to play in theaters nationwide on Friday, May 10, 2013.

Part of the movie’s $104 million budget went into extensive advertising campaigns where some ads, such as the first trailer for the film released on May 22, 2012, date as far back as nearly a year before its release.

The marketing was pushed even further when on April 15, 2013, “The Gatsby Collection,” a line of men's clothing, shoes and accessories “inspired by the costumes designed by Catherine Martin for Baz Luhrmann's The Great Gatsby,” was said to be displayed in certain Brooks Brothers boutiques such as New York City flagship and Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive.

Other than ads, the movie has gotten a vast amount of attention and has widely spread word of mouth for its star power alone. It features Oscar-nominated Leonardo DiCaprio as the leading character, Jay Gatsby, and a supporting cast including Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire and Isla Fisher

Dating back to 1926, this is the fifth film adapted from the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel of the same name. It is projected to place second, if not first, at the box office following the current financial success of Iron Man 3.
