Casting for adaptation of Trash has now starred with Deadline reporting two major actors joining the project, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s Rooney Mara and President Barrett himself Martin Sheen.
Andy Mulligan’s Trash is a critically acclaimed children’s novel from the UK, being placed on the shortlist for the Carnegie Medal in 2011, but controversially overruled for the Blue Peter Book Awards because its content was considered too old for the intended audience. The novel is set in Behala, West Bengal about three street kids who live as scavengers on the rubbish mounds to survive who find a leather bag contending documents about corporate and government corruption. The adaptation is going to be filmed in Brazil with new actors, Rickson Tevez, Eduardo Luis and Gabriel Weinstein starring as Raphael, Gardo and Rat. Mara is set to play Olivia, a NGO worker and Sheen playing Father Juillard.
Trash is currently being produced by Universal Studios and Working Title Films and has an impressive talent behind the cameras. Stephen Daldry of Billy Elliot and Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close fame is set to director and famed writer Richard Curtis (Blackadder, War Horse).
Trash is currently set for a May 2014 release in the UK.
