Whedon talks “Avengers” females

There's no denying that Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly) has assembled a fantastic cast for the upcoming “Avengers” film, though the question has come up regarding the presence of women in the forthcoming Marvel mix tape (by guys and gals alike).

So far, the only lady Avenger made aware to the public has been Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), hailing from the “Iron Man” film franchise. A phone call placed by Whedon to the Sunday Herald Sun confirms she will be the only official female Avenger.

"It is true that the movie is only going to have one female Avenger, but she will not be the only female character," he says, which is cause for speculation. Who of the ladies will be making the transition to the upcoming film? Could it be Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow) of “Iron Man” fame or Betty Ross (Liv Tyler) from the "Hulk" franchise? Literally speaking, it could mean that other females will appear in the film, who knows.

Whedon is already at work rewriting the script but remains silent on the overall plot. However, he has confirmed that the film would use a number of different Avengers stories, taking from the source material as well as their “Ultimate” storylines.

"It will be a new story that has many things from different arcs of the comics in it. There is no one Avengers story that you can just do the way that you can do the origin of Spider-Man.”

Suffice to say, there will be a lot going on in The Avengers. Let's hope that it doesn't get too crowded.
