Turn off the Lights

Firefly Online to iOS/Android

I was fresh in college when I first discovered Firefly via the movie Serenity. That may be sacrilegious to some, but for me, I still find the movie enjoyable and supremely underrated. Those who share an even deeper love for Joss Whedon's collection of much-nonsense explorers will be able to command their own crew at the touch of a screen. Fox Digital Entertainment and QMX Interactive are in development of a mobile game based on the beloved cult-hit and streaming must-watch (a la Netflix). Firefly Online will be an experience in which you traverse the universe and interact with users cross-platform (iOS and Android) and cross-device. Outlined on the game's webpage, players will:

  • Assume the role of a ship captain - create a crew and customize a ship
  • Aim to misbehave in space and planet-side adventures
  • Cross-platform player experience across devices (pick-up and play from anywhere)
  • Unique social features connecting Firefly fans
  • Create a shiny ship and explore the Verse

In development with Spark Plug games, this game will be big on uniqueness. As described by John O’Neil, President of Spark Plug Games "When we were first approached with this challenge, we realized that Firefly was unique among shows and movies, so only a unique game experience could do it justice". No price point or definitive release date has been announced but it is expected during the summer of 2014. Is this maybe a prelude to some good Joss Whedon news and maybe the band coming back for one big performance? Probably not, but hey, I can dream.
