‘The Interview’ Makes Record-Breaking Sales Online/VOD

"The controversial comedy made a boatload of money in streaming formats "
Despite all of the controversy that has been placed upon the comedy The Interview, it appears Sony's decision to release the movie in online and video-on-demand services has paid off in the long run. According to Deadline, the Seth Rogen/James Franco comedy has grossed an impressive $31 million in online and VOD revenues, between December 24th and January 4th. Sony pictures claims that the movie has become their studio's "#1 online film of all-time." In addition, the movie received a limited release in independent theaters, where it has grossed $5 million to-date.

Clearly Sony has made lemonade out of lemons, after their wide-release of the movie was halted last-minute, due to threats from the Sony hackers and many of the large movie theatre chains dropping the film, out of safety concerns. All of the moving around over the distribution has provided the studio extra publicity for the mixed-reviewed comedy, which piqued audience's interest enough to shell out money to see it. The movie has managed to live on longer than anyone involved could have ever imagined and will be remembered for how digital distribution has emerged as a vital player for films in Hollywood.
