Turn off the Lights

Stiller, Vaughn and Hill Unite In ‘Neighborhood Watch’ Teaser

Though you may not have heard of it, Neighborhood Watch has had a pretty tumultuous journey from idea to theatrical release. Using the inspired executive film blueprint of “PG-13 kind of Ghostbusters-y thing,” a screenplay was formed by mid 2009 and had Wedding Crasher’s helmer David Dobkin on for directing duties, with Will Farrell to star.

With both Dobkin and Farrell dropping out a year later, the studio brought in Superbad writing team Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg to do a complete rewrite with an R-rating. Hot Rod director Akiva Schaffer accepted the option to direct in mid-2011, and the film finally made its way into production.

Now that 20th Century Fox has the film printed and ready, they’ve released a teaser. You’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a car ad given how low-key the trailer is, but the premise comes across pretty well. Stars Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill and The IT Crowd’s Richard Ayoade play a posse of average guys that fill the ranks of their local suburb’s neighborhood watch...

...Who then must stop an alien invasion. That’s actually not a joke; the film’s plot description features the windbreaker-wearing vigilantes trying to thwart an extraterrestrial plot to take over the earth. The creative team are clearly saving the good stuff for later, and it’s hard to blame them. Stiller and Vaughn in a comedy? Could be funny. Stiller and Vaughn in a suburban alien invasion movie? Could be awesome.
