TV Shows Renewals and Cancellations (Fall 2012) Updated
The last time we discussed renewals and cancellations, we were wondering why so few had been announced. Today, less than three weeks away from the major broadcast networks' upfront meetings, many more fateful announcements have been made. Following the industry tradition, the upfront events will bear witness to the final swings of the cancellation axes toward the shivering TV series whose fates will still be in doubt. Which is why we thought now would be a good time to summarize where we stand, share with you which of your favorite TV shows (including cable) have been renewed, which have been cancelled or which are still helplessly (or calmly) awaiting a decision.

While popular and critically acclaimed shows like New Girl (Fox) and Game of Thrones (HBO) were each renewed very early, Fox's Fringe has just snatched renewal from the jaws of cancellation by being granted a 13-episode fifth and final season.

According to most prediction mechanisms, the survival of a primetime scripted show generally depends on its average rating (in the adults aged 18-49 demographic) relative to the average rating of all other primetime shows on the same network. There are some minor additional considerations that are dealt with differently by each predicting website but, suffice it to say, the ratings of the shows above scream in favor of renewal. It has had better reviews, but has been steadily losing viewers since its impressive premiere. Alcatraz (Fox)CSI: Miami (CBS)Awake (NBC)Secret Circle (CW)While Chuck, Eureka and House have several seasons under their belts, Terra Nova was prematurely canceled after a first season of thirteen episodes. The show's acceptable ratings apparently failed to meet Fox's expectations which were understandably high because of production costs.
