Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi in ‘Pacific Rim’

The San Diego Comic-Con is just around the corner. Guillermo del Toro’s Pacific Rim will have its own panel, so it’s no surprise that we’ve been treated to a new image from the upcoming sci-fi film that shows Charlie Hunnam and Academy Award nominee Rinko Kikuchi wearing metal suits.

“Rim” sees a world in which humans fight against monstrous sea creatures, called Kaiju, with Jaegers, large robots “controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge.” The Jaegers aren’t helping the fight for humanity but so much, so a former pilot and inexperienced trainee – played by Hunnam and Kikuchi, respectively – operate a Jaeger from yesteryear to defeat the Kaiju.

If you were to fuse the suits of Iron Man and Samus from Metroid, the result might look something like these suits. Based on the plot of “Rim,” it seems that Hunnam and Kikuchi are preparing for battle with the Kaiju in this still. The image comes from the new Entertainment Weekly issue via Shock Till You Drop.

Pacific Rim hits theaters on July 12, 2013.
