Philip Seymour Hoffman Offered ‘Catching Fire’ Role

There’s been quite a bit of hoopla regarding who’ll play Finnick Odair in The Hunger Games: Catching Fire, the sequel to this year’s pop-culture phenomenon The Hunger Games. With so much attention on who’ll play Finnick Odair, the possible casting of another character almost went unnoticed.

The Hollywood Reporter relays that Lionsgate has offered Philip Seymour Hoffman the role of Plutarch Heavensbee. Minor spoilers here, but this character replaces Seneca Crane, played by Wes Bentley, as the Hunger Games head gamemaker. If Hoffman signs on for the film, he’ll star alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, and Liam Hemsworth, all of who will reprise their roles from the first film.

Lionsgate hopes to get “Fire” rolling in September, so the studio still has some time to weed through potential Finnicks, whoever they might be. Director Francis Lawrence takes over the helm that Gary Ross occupied for the first film.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire currently aims for theatrical release on November 22, 2013.
