As I find myself in the penultimate issue of Harvest, I feel as though it’s possible my pacing fears will be well-founded. It seems as though AJ Lieberman needs at least two more issues to conclude this story in a satisfactory manner. This one essentially picks up where the other one left off - unless I’m missing something due to the months between releases, we’re still at patient number one from whom Dr Benjamin Dane is exacting his revenge. Given how slowly (relatively speaking) events evolve in this issue, it appears that Lieberman might be going for the sad, if more realistic, ending to this series. Either way this is what I love so much about mini-series with non-established characters. We have no idea if Dr Dane will get to escape with his life. We don't know if he changes anything through his actions. It could all be in vain. You just don't get that from a Batman or Spider-Man story.
With that out of the way, I think this mini-series continues to impress. Colin Lorimer’s art continues to shine and it really suits the themes of the series. It’s realistic and gritty. The gutters continue to be creative and he is not afraid to use panels that consist entirely of silhouettes. I am enjoying it so much that I might check out a future title just because Lorimer's on it. The writing is still sharp and witty and Lieberman continues to surprise me. Just when I think I know what’s going to happen to Dr Dane, I get thrown a curveball. It makes for a great reading experience and none of the surprises are so out of left field that they seem random or far-fetched.
I am now waiting impatiently for the next, and final, entry in this series. This book has contained one of my favorite plots of 2012 and I urge you to try and grab the previous issues. If you can’t find physical copies at your local shop, check out ComiXology. As a bonus, most Image books are a dollar cheaper a month after they come out so it should work out financially. Definitely buy this issue!
