Actress Jessica Chastain is coming off of a creatively successful 2014, with roles in a combination of indie and mainstream fare: The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby, Interstellar, Miss Julie, and A Most Violent Year. The latter landed her a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress and just missed the mark of landing an Oscar nomination. She already has a pair of Academy Award nominations for Zero Dark Thirty (2012) and The Help (2011).
Now, Chastain will be joining a high-profile project. According to Variety, she has closed a deal to join Chris Hemsworth (Rush) and Charlize Theron (Monster) in Universal’s The Huntsman. Emily Blunt (Into the Woods) is also set to join the cast. Cedric Nicolas-Troyan is directing the movie. He was the second-unit director on Snow White and the Huntsman. This would mark his feature directing debut.
Plot details are vague beyond that the spinoff film reveals how the fates of two characters, the Huntsman Eric (Hemsworth) and Ravenna (Theron), intersected before they met Snow White. Details on Chastain’s character are also vague.
Frank Darabont (The Green Mile), who was previously attached to direct before falling off, wrote the current draft of the screenplay, with earlier drafts by Craig Mazin and Evan Spiliotopoulos.
The film is set to release on April 22, 2016. She can be seen next in Guillermo del Toro’s Gothic drama Crimson Peak, which spooks in October, and follows that up with Ridley Scott’s sci-fi drama The Martian, landing in November.
