Preview Time – Soldier Zero #9

Another issue of Stan Lee alien goodness is upon us and having already read this issue I’ll tell you, it’s going to be good! Soldier Zero has become consistently better with each passing issue, so you can expect that #9 is no exception. If you’ve been missing out on the series this issue is also the start of a new story arc so here’s yet another chance to start reading this book. With Abnett and Lanning writing it, its a bit like Nova from Marvel, but with it has a great world created for it all on it’s own. Check it out and then check back for the review.

Preview Time – Darkwing Duck #13

It’s been awhile since Darkwing made an appearance on the site and that pains me. Not only was he one of the few original cartoons spawned from the Disney Afternoon Block (with the exception of Launchpad), but it was great cartoon that showed the ridiculous side of masked avengers running around in the dark. Thankfully Boom! saved Darkwing from retirement and brought him back in a monthly series. Something told me I should pick up the thirteenth issue and because of that you get a preview!

Warehouse 13 Coming From Dynamite

It stands to reason that if comic books can be adapted into
movies, TV shows and videogames that those other forms of entertainment can be
adapted into comics. That’s why Dynamite Entertainment is bringing the SyFy channel’s
Warehouse 13 to comic books this August. If you’re a fan of the show then you
should probably check it out since the stories won’t be limited by budget
restraints that prevent them from traveling afar, in fact the first story arc
takes the team to Brazil! The only question I have is where’s the cover from
Alex Ross?

In August, Catch Up On Some Damn Dirty Apes

The first arc of Boom!’s Planet of the Apes may not be done yet, but they are ready to promote this summer’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes with their trade paperback of the first story arc. You might be thinking, “What the hell you’re only halfway through the story arc, why are you talking about the trade?” The thing is Planet of the Apes has been more popular than Boom! ever expected, so if you haven’t been reading it already you’re probably not going to be able to find the first two issues. Your next best bet is the trade. The deal is sweetened by the low introductory cover price of 9.99 and shipping in the same month is the fifth issue for a dollar. That’s right; all of you that missed out on this series and thought it was going to be a cheap cash-in can pick up the first five issues for $11.00 dollars. That’s a great value, unless you don’t understand comic pricing in which case you’ll have to take my word for it.

Herc #2 – Review

The great thing about this issue is that it’s hard to tell if it’s part of a six issue story or if it’s just a part of something bigger happening in the series. So often in comics from Marvel and DC the writers write for the trade paperback meaning they have six issues to tell their story. With the second issue of Herc there is a real conclusion to the first part of the story. Elements of that story will continue, but there was real resolution in this issue which is rare in modern comics.

Undying Love #3 – Advanced Review

Undying Love has gone back to being a bit better than the first
issue
was, with some of the same and different reasons as to why.  The story’s events begin before the
first two issues and tell the story of how John met Mei during his service as a
soldier and how John decides to protect Mei and travel with her. Tomm Coker and Daniel Freedman are putting their creativity
to good use in this latest issue of Undying Love
Mei’s character, one that seemed nothing more than a simple
damsel-in-distress an issue ago, has proven to have a lot more bite in
this
issue – and in deceptive amounts.
Coker and Freedman really outline Mei’s insatiable blood lust in this
issue with great results and make Mei seem both deceptively innocent and
deadly, a great combination with a vampire that really makes you wonder
if she
will ever turn on her GI Joe-model boyfriend.  Hopefully this is
intentional, otherwise Mei’s rapid mood
swings throughout the issue are just examples of inconsistent writing.
If planned, this tactic is a great one.  It gives her character depth
and makes
me even more curious to learn about her origins and the very first time
she
ever became a vampire, which will hopefully be answered in future
issues.

Comic Book Theater Festival – Nerdlesque Review

Ever see an attractive cosplayer at a comic book convention and wish you could see them naked? Of course you have, which is why you’ll probably enjoy Nerdlesque, a monthly burlesque show with a rotating nerd theme.  This month they did a comic book motif as part of the Brick Theater’s Comic Book Theater Festival.  As both a theatre critic and a comic book reviewer, my journalistic integrityrequired me to experience Nerdlesque first hand and report back to the comic book community about the performance.
