After last week’s fast-moving and fire-filled outing, this Sunday finds many of the Game of Thrones characters looking to the past as the show reaches the halfway point of season three. The central theme of “Kissed by Fire” is how the past shapes the future, with multiple characters mulling the past actions and inactions that have brought them to where they are today.
Game of Thrones is on fire with its fourth episode of its third season. Daenerys proves she is more that a weak young girl, Sam finally takes a step toward becoming his own man, and Varys begins to scheme to save Sansa Stark from the clutches of Littlefinger. But all is not well in Westeros, nor beyond the Wall, as some characters meet death head-on, and Theon once again returns to prison.
Tonight’s episode, Walk of Punishment, starts off surprisingly comical. The first scene takes place at the funeral for Robb’s grandfather where his uncle, Edmure Tully, inadvertently makes it very awkward by missing the boat with his flamed arrows. To be fair, that does look like a pretty tough duty to pull off. On a side note, as a fan of HBO’s Rome, it is interesting to see the actors for both Caesar and Brutus on this series now. Edmure seems to be a Tully with some Lannister traits. Robb chews him out for not sticking to his plan, in a scene that further develops him as a strong leader and strategist.
Dark Wings, Dark Words takes a closer look at the plotlines and characters that weren’t featured in the premiere. We do get glimpses at Cersei and Tyrion, but this episode is centered on the Starks and Tyrells. The Starks being likable and the noble family to root for has been established since the very first episode, but the other families are much more of a mixed bag.
The season 3 premiere for Game of Thrones makes all the right moves to keep the momentum going from its stellar second season and also looks like it might improve upon the few plotlines that didn’t deliver last year. With so many storylines going at once, it would be hard to expect all of them to be equal to each other.
Favorites such as the sword Ice, Joffrey’s crossbow, and even the Iron Throne will be shown to the public beginning in March. Swoon.
