On Saturday, July 28, the Television Critics Association (TCA) honored television’s most outstanding programs in 12 categories. HBO’s critically-acclaimed Game of Thrones was crowned “Program of the Year,” and Showtime’s Homeland was named “Outstanding New Program,” an honored bestowed to Game of Thrones in 2011.
San Diego’s Comic Con is three weeks away and more details are starting to emerge on panels and their locations at the convention center. It would seem Game of Thrones has secured the coveted Hall H, the mammoth venue generally reserved for blockbuster movies with a comic-con-friendly audience. This year, the enormous room will also hold panels for Fringe and The Big Bang Theory which (just like Game of Thrones’) were traditionally held in a smaller room.

After ten weeks of exciting storytelling, Game of Thrones‘s second season bowed out with a couple of episodes that ramped up the action and brought the proceedings to an appropriately enticing resting place. Although the sophomore season of the popular HBO series was arguably better than the first, at PlayerAffinity TV, we have decided to take a look at the show from a more wary perspective. We set out to round up those areas that could be improved, areas that might ultimately be responsible for its demise, or at least for a drop in popularity.
Following the excitements of the battle of Blackwater Bay, “Valar Morghulis” was very much about rewarding friends and settling scores, even in places and storylines very removed from King’s Landing and its recent clash of kings. The season finale of Game of Thrones also brought most of the year’s storylines to a resting point, providing a sense of wonder in the process, something very different from the emotions of the adrenaline-fueled scenes of the previous week.
As HBO’s Game of Thrones wraps its second season, Entertainment Weekly obtained (from showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff) the list of characters who will be introduced in the upcoming season.
Although the rightly titled “Blackwater” was centered on the battle that took place in the Blackwater bay and on the shores of King’s Landing, the real drama — which made the episode stand out — wasn’t so much about the battle as it was about what was unfolding around key characters, particularly what happened in the king’s castle, the Red Keep. The threat of death loomed above Tyrion, Cersei, Stannis, the Hound and Sansa until the arrival of mounted knights.
“The Prince of Winterfell” was slower than some of the previous episodes this season, but conveyed a more palpable sense of an impending doom. At its heart was a courtship that took its time to get to fruition, but also because many of its storylines led characters closer to a final showdown and not further. Amidst all that, the episode also saw many characters committing to others or to something, from Theon Greyjoy linking his fate to Winterfell, to Stannis Baratheon prematurely finding his hand (as in Hand of the king), and even Shae and Tyrion committing to each other.
There were honorable deeds in “A Man Without Honor,” though predictably not from the man in the title, but from many others, including women. The episode of Game of Thrones also treated us to several variants of the cat-and-mouse game featuring fleeting escapes, not-so-veiled threats, and the best of it all, cat and mouse switching places to our delight.
Besides Theon Greyjoy who wreaked havoc on Winterfell, other major characters were either in danger or were flirting with it in “The Old Gods and the New.” The Game of Thrones’ episode was filled with danger, from the kind that makes you wonder who’s next on the chopping block to the kind that makes you wonder whose heart will be caught next. Virtually no significant character was spared, including dragons.
