Emmy Nominations 2011: Fringe Snubbed & Game of Thrones Praised

This year’s Emmy nominations have just been unveiled as reported by Ali, and two dramas dear to Player Affinity TV (PATV) have met strikingly different fates. Fringe was all but ignored while Game of Thrones not only won recognition but arguably broke the glass ceiling. Since the announcement yesterday, Fringe
seems to have garnered better chances in a less prestigious contest.
The series has been appearing systematically on lists about the “Biggest
Snubs” of this year’s Emmy Awards. Fox’s sci-fi drama received Emmy
nominations in 2009 and 2010 for visual effects and sound editing
respectively. For its third season, generally considered by fans as its
best by far, expectations were high. Many timidly hoped for a nomination
of the drama series itself, more felt Anna Torv’s performance deserved a
nod, but all agreed John Noble could not be denied an Emmy. Anna Torv
and John Noble have both impressed and delighted viewers by each of them
playing several characters throughout the season.

Game of Thrones – Fire and Blood

I think the season finale of Game of Thrones illustrated some of the
differences between it and the books well. It was a good episode, and a
lot of important stuff definitely happened, but it also felt a bit light
after the huge events of the last couple weeks. There was a whole lot
of reaction to Ned’s death, and in general it felt like things were just
decompressing a bit. In the book, Ned is killed with a lot more than
10% of the story left to go, and he felt less like the main character
because he was only one of several to get his own viewpoint chapters. So
while it was able to continue on at full speed after his head and body
parted ways, the show definitely seemed to position him more as the
central figure, and his absence could be felt just a bit. There’s
obviously plenty to entice viewers with next year, but with there only
being one episode after his execution to wrap things up, there wasn’t a
real opportunity to actually show new things happening, and so instead
there was just a bunch of pieces moving into place for new threads later
on. Only Daenerys’ story seemed to have major events going on, even if
elsewhere there was plenty happening.

Game of Thrones – Baelor

The penultimate episode of Game of Thrones’ first season didn’t have a
lot of Eddard Stark in it, besides the opening and closing scenes,
which did a great job of reminding the audience of who this man is one
last time before his unexpected and pitiable death. I was quite
surprised by this event when reading the book, and I imagine most people
who were new to the story were as well when they saw those last couple
minutes. It just seems like an obvious move to banish Ned to the Wall
with his son and set up some story threads that way, and it does make
sense for Cersei to keep him alive for political reasons, and you just
forget that Joffrey is actually the king at this point, doesn’t really
understand what he’s doing, and would love to see a couple heads roll in
his honor. It’s a gut punch to have a major character put aside his
honor and duty to protect his family and then lose everything anyway,
and establishes once and for all that this isn’t your standard fantasy
plot, and if there are any safe characters, it’s hard to tell who they
are.

Game of Thrones – The Pointy End

This show just keeps getting better, doesn’t it? Things went from bad
to worse in last night’s episode of Game of Thrones, written by George
R.R. Martin, the author of the books himself. Everybody got something to
do, the monologues were less lengthy and preachy, and they never felt
the need to resort to bare breasts to grab the viewer’s attention
(though there is a very different sort of nudity in there). The action
is reaching a fever pitch, and while a lot of it must take place off
screen due to the concerns of TV budgeting, Westeros is definitely
becoming a very unsafe place to be.

Game of Thrones – You Win or You Die

This episode of Game of Thrones was so good that I didn’t
even realize until it was nearly over that the best character didn’t appear at
all. The Eyrie still showed up in the opening credits, but none of the
characters in that area showed up, and we barely saw Winterfell either, with
yet another scene reminding us that Theon is the son of the lord of the Iron
Islands and being held in the North, in case we forgot the one from the last
episode and the one before that, and the one before that. But while that scene
dragged a bit, the stuff in King’s Landing and at the Wall and in the east was
really good, and the last ten minutes of the episode were pretty damn dramatic –
things are going very badly for some people, and even though I know what’s
going to happen, I can’t wait to watch the rest of it play out.

Game of Thrones – The Golden Crown

I think last night’s episode of Game of Thrones featured the series’
first real death of a significant character. I mean, the Starks were
pretty upset about Jory taking a knife in the eye from Jaime last week,
but as far as the story goes he mostly just did errands for Ned.  But
Viserys finally getting his golden crown from Khal Drogo, after becoming
more of a well-rounded character recently (he’s still a dirtbag, but we
understand why he’s a dirtbag better), gave viewers the first true
taste of how safe everyone is. Which is to say: not very. And things are
going to get a lot worse soon.

Game of Thrones – The Wolf and the Lion

The latest episode of Game of Thrones was the best one yet, and I
think a big part of that was it didn’t feel the need to touch base on
absolutely every character and plot thread. I didn’t even notice until
today that we visited neither Jon at the Wall or Daenerys across the
Narrow Sea, but we didn’t need to, because most of the really important
stuff that happens with them needs to wait a little bit to get going,
and there was plenty going on in Westeros, especially in King’s Landing.
It was easily the bloodiest episode yet, and one that should prove to
anyone wondering that yes, there is a point to all this, and things are
going to get messy.

Game of Thrones – Cripples, Bastards, and Broken Things

A lot of shows settle in after a few weeks of explaining things to
refocus on the current story, though if anything, last night’s Game of
Thrones episode actually had significantly more exposition than the
previous ones. We learned the backstories of a few minor characters, we
learned more about the war that gave Robert the throne and the last
winter, we learned about when places were built and the names of some
dragons. Having already read the books, it’s hard for me to know how
much of this information is really useful, and how much is just window
dressing I’m already familiar with that spices up the reading but can
slow a TV show down a bit. The book worked by bringing you inside the
heads of several significant characters from chapter to chapter, and
needing all of these stories and tidbits to be told in dialogue instead
seemed to bog it down a bit. It’s still a well-made show, and the cast
did a good job of wringing some entertainment out of those speeches, but
I did think it was a little dull in comparison.

Game of Thrones – Lord Snow

Last night’s rock solid episode of Game of Thrones was paced a bit
slower than the first two, but it was still an engaging and well
produced hour of television. There was less in the way of major
revelations, but we learned more about some of the characters, met a few
new ones, and got to see a little bit of how things normally work in
King’s Landing before they inevitably go to hell as the plot wears on.
