The Lorax Review

At its core, The Lorax is  a faithful adaptation, and while the source material is strong, there is simply just not that much to be faithful to. At only 45 pages, adapting this book is akin to stretching out a Saturday Night Live skit or basing a film on a board game or toy – ample padding must be provided.

Being Super in Earth 2

DC has capped off the week with previews of Superman and Supergirl for their May relaunch of Earth 2 in the form of two ongoing series. Worlds’ Finest will star Power Girl, formerly the Supergirl depicted here, along with Huntress while Earth 2 with feature a different take on the DC Trinity along with other characters from a world that seems to get a little darker with every reveal.

I’ve got to say — DC really started with their best foot forward this week on the Earth 2 previews, because they sure didn’t save the best for last here.

Asura’s Wrath is such an unusually unique experience I don’t know whether to call it more of a game or an interactive anime or even who to really recommend it to.

The Robin and Wonder Woman of Earth 2

DC continues its week of Earth 2 previews with glimpses of that world’s Robin, currently known as Huntress and future co-star of Worlds’ Finest and Wonder Woman, set to star in the ongoing Earth 2 series beginning in May.

Details revealed about these two characters paint a better picture of the new Earth 2, revealing it to be a darker place than most were probably expecting. Is this going to be a trend with the rest of Earth 2’s cast? Is Earth 2 not only a world where familiar heroes are older but a world where they have also lived notably tougher lives?

Spartacus: Vengeance – Libertus

Before I begin my review about this week’s episode of Spartacus: Vengeance, give me a few seconds while I remove my foot from my mouth after the comments I made last week. After Spartacus’ plan to extract Naevia from the mines completely backfired, an even more ambitious plan to save Crixus & Oenomaus seemed like the dumbest thing to do… or so some of us thought. The writers made me eat my own words this week by not only giving us the BEST episode of the season (and possibly the series), but by also showing us that when Spartacus and his band of gladiators really apply themselves, the very foundation of Rome is at risk of crumbling beneath their feet. “Libertus” was an episode that had something for fans & critics alike —- universal agreement that this show is not messing around. Spartacus: Vengeance is an exotic masterpiece that stands in a league of its own, and “Libertus” was a prime example of why that is so. It isn’t often that we’re in a position to summarize an episode with a single word, but “Libertus” was EPIC.

Z-Girl: Odyssey #2 – Review

Z-Girl: The Odyssey #2 is infinitely better than the premier issue. The characters still have development issues and the artwork has some distracting quirks, but the story has gotten much better and the monstrous creations the team comes up with are always enjoyable to see.

Z-Girl, a zombie in charge of protecting the four tiger spirits and their respective hosts, has her hands full when the team excavates a site with numerous relics that are a bit more life-like than they appear. Even if her team survives, there are even more dangerous forces waiting in the wings to take back the tablets her team has been gathering, tablets that hint at Z-Girl’s sinister past.

Alcatraz – Johnny McKee

“Johnny McKee” flowed at just the right pace, and as a result, felt much shorter than all previous episodes. The weakest part of the now established episode pattern — the story set in modern day San Francisco — was also better, all things that contributed to a slightly better than usual episode of Alcatraz. Before discussing “Johnny McKee,” let’s go over my grief with the series so far in more details. Whatever the author’s brand of dramatic structure, a story is typically broken into an introductory part, one or several parts where things are developed, and a closing part. In the introduction, we get a little background information and details about what the problem is, like let’s say the identity of the returning inmate and the fact that on top of being a wandering convict, he is killing people and needs to be stopped. In the middle part, things get ugly before they get better for the protagonists (heroes), as in they try to find the inmate, but they can’t do it in time before he kills other innocent people. They finally get whatever it is they need to be locate him, but they (and we) are not sure they’ll be able to fend off the current threat. In the closing part, the heroes save the day, as in they get to the inmate in time to stop him and then go back home to draw lessons from what has happened or read a book to a lady in a coma.
